Constable was an British landscape painter. He painted familiar landscapes based on close observation of nature.
His approach to painting the landscape as he observed was later inherited by the Impressionists.
Constable repeatedly painted his favorite landscapes, and the Dedham valley is one such subject. This painting was painted shortly after he became a painter, and the faithful depiction of the landscape shows his deep affection for his native landscapes.
The touch in the lower left of the picture by the palette knife creates a pleasant rhythm.
